What's the point of all of this?

Depends who it was really. If it was one of my close friends, then I would say it upfront straight away. If it was someone I knew yet really didn't talk to, I would wait as long as I could to avoid it until mentionning it abruptly, saying it as if I hadn't seen it before and was asking what was there.
